Practice
“The crisis of our sensitivity to the living reflects in a lack of "culture of the living". Working to enhance our culture of the living is therefore also a political gesture, at a time when we finally understand the profound toxicity of relating to the living as the simple decoration of our lives.” — Estelle Zhong Mengual, Apprendre à voir, 2019

Mathilde Cazes' practice encompasses photography, sculpture and installation. She questions our past, present and future relationship with nature and the other living and non-living things around us. This leads her down many different paths, questioning feelings and facts related to death, hope, and the disappearance of animal and plant species... I remain in search of pure lines, oscillating between a minimal aesthetic close to Japanese thought and a more dreamlike approach.

Trained in traditional Japanese ceramics in Kyoto, she developed a deep connection with Japan and Japanese culture. As a potter, she also designs and makes functional object
